Lateef Symposium at Vanderbilt University
The Yusef Lateef Symposium presents a special concert event with Autophysiopsychic Millennium (APPM), a creative research and performance collective that explores, experiments, and studies the music philosophy and spiritual works of the late, famed Detroit-based musician Dr. Yusef abd-Lateef. Day two of the conference culminated with a special evening Ingram Hall performance by Autophysiopsychic Millenium, a creative research music collective inspired by the works of Yusef Lateef.

Cranbrook Art Museum
Autophysiopsychic Millennium completed a summer-long residency at Cranbrook Art Museum in partnership with the Horizon Upward Bound Program (HUB). Tazeen Ayub, LuFuki, and Mike Monford taught an elective course on Autophysiopsychic for the HUB Program, a Black-led program that serves over 200 Black and Brown Detroit students. At the end of the course, they presented their own interpretation of the book through music, poetry, visual arts, and theater in a beautiful presentation, backed by our APPM ensemble, for the entire HUB program- students, faculty, and families.
The ensemble put together and performed a theatrical musical reimagining of Dr. Lateef’s novella, Night in the Garden of Love, together, that took place at the Cranbrook Greek Theater on August 5th, 2022.
Again the Midwest connection, Detroit and Chicago, team up to form Autophysiopsychic Millennium to uplift the environment through sound and magic at Techtonic Black The Lawndale Arts Festival on Saturday August 6:, 2022

University of Michigan’s Center for World Performance Studies
Co-sponsored by the Center for World Performances, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and the U-M Arts Initiative, APPM was invited for a one-week residency at the University of Michigan. The group did workshops, classroom visits, a panel discussion, an open workshop, and a culminating performance entitled Intentions.

On Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we present a Tribute to Dr. Yusef Lateef with a presentation of his Autophysiopsychic Music of the Spirit. This exciting 10-piece group, featuring Angel Bat Dawid and LuFuki, combines the forces of Dr. Lateef’s mentees from Detroit and Chicago.

Angel Bat Dawid—the “blazingly original” Chicago-based clarinetist and bandleader who “captures the unbridled sound of obstacles overcome, history revered, and a future imagined” (Pitchfork)—joins forces with LuFuki and Dr. Adam Zanolini to form Autophysiopsychic Millennium, exploring the performance methodology of instrumentalist and composer Dr. Yusef Lateef in what they describe as an Afrofuturist Participatory Sonic Convocation. ELASTIC ARTS - AFROFUTURIST WEEKEND
Members of the Chicago- and Detroit-based collective Autophysiopsychic Millenium, led by Adam Zanolini, LuFuki and Angel Bat Dawid, will offer a workshop on the work of multi-instrumentalist and composer Yusef Lateef from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022 in the Henry Student Center Ballroom.
Lateef’s music explored African, Middle Eastern and Indian traditions, incorporating them into “jazz,” a term he rejected in favor of his own term Autophysiopsychic music.
The workshop will be interwoven with musical performance and discussion. The project explores Lateef’s work as a progenitor to the concept of Afrofuturism, which blends music, visual arts, science fiction and technology to imagine alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.
